CMD<create>CTRL aims to help make Southend a better place to live and work by offering workshops and activities that encourage and enable more people to use and understand computing and electronics, especially open-source and non-proprietorial software, and low-cost hardware like Raspberry Pi and Arduino, for pleasure, education, training and employment. Free weekly sessions for young people interested in coding, computing and tinkering with tech. Bring your own project or try one of ours, including Raspberry Pi and Scratch.

FPG’s Project Space is situated in the centre of the organisation and is equipped with an in-built projector and surround sound. Courses for children, young people and adults of all abilities offer the use of DSLR cameras, i-pads, macbook pros and high resolution scanner, along with a range of analogue equipment. FPG’s close proximity to the Big Screen presents the opportunity for workshop participants to have their artwork digitally displayed on the public screen.

Clarissa is a professional photographer specialising in photographing people. She has been teaching photography and photo editing at Southend Adult Community College since 2000. She also organises private one-to-one and group training through her company, Film Free Photography.

Laurence Harding
Photography

Laurence is a freelance photographer/artist, specialising in portraiture and conceptual photography. She is available for freelance/commission work and courses in creative and alternative photographic processes, digital or analogue photography, as well as artist book-making workshops. Laurence is a trained Arts Award advisor and has led various creative workshops for children and adults, independently and with arts organisations.

Idea13 is a network for culture and events across Southend-on-Sea, developed and managed by Metal. Work placements and volunteering can be offered across a broad range of venues, interests and skillsets, according to current projects. The Idea13 website requires digital creative and technical upkeep, and often features video interviews, reviews and graphics. It is an ideal opportunity to gain experience in interview techniques, filming, editing, content management systems and some basic coding.

FPG Film Club presents a series of feature films, archive footage or internet videos, chosen by the exhibiting artist. The programme offers new approaches to the interests and influences of a particular artist or project. Screening events are free to attend and welcoming to all within the certification guidelines.

Alan Hockett

​

Alan Hockett explores the material qualities of the analogue medium, mixing with advanced digital techniques and other media. By converting found objects into a camera obscura, he makes pin-hole photographs, a process which can form the basis of fun and informative projects, sharing his extensive experience of working with a variety of community groups. Alan is available for freelance/commission work, workshops in creative and alternative photographic processes. He is a trained advisor in Discover, Explore, Bronze, Silver and Gold Arts Awards and is co-founder of Heritage Lottery funded project ‘Jaywick For Happiness’.
